The aim of the research and analysis is to create a mathematical model for calculating the coefficient of the penetration characterizing the ballistic protection of metallic materials. The ballistic protection means the ability of the material to resist the effect shoots. The penetration of the tested steel plate was the monitored parameter. The steel plate either resists the effect of the kinetic energy of the shoot or the shoot causes its penetration.

The steel sheets of different thicknesses and various mechanical properties are largely used for shooting-range construction. The steel sheets are especially used for the production of trapping ballistic apertures, protective ballistic walls, bullet catchers, etc. The thickness of the steel sheets is most often designed by an estimation or a practical test when the proposed steel sheet is loaded by the action of the shoots of the biggest expected caliber which will be used at the specific shooting-range. In these tests, however, the necessary structural design conditions are often not followed. The results are therefore inaccurate, resulting in a reduction in the maximum authorized ammunition. In case of the shooting-range construction designed for the snipers training, an inappropriate design of protective steel plates may result in obstruction of the training and loss of investment.

By analyzing the spheres and the deformation effects of the shoots, the mathematical model of the calculation of the coefficient of the penetration characterizing the ballistic protection of a particular metal material, was defined by the known mathematical dependencies of the shear mechanism. The mathematical model for calculating the coefficient of the penetration is an instrument for designing materials, assessing of their ballistic protection against the effect of the kinetic energy of the shoots, clarifying the course of the shoot due to deformations or identifying ammunition and weapon.
